A Guide to Restoring Your Classic Car on a Budget

There are few experiences that match the excitement of driving a classic car, whether it’s a Ferrari or Porsche. But what happens when you find a car you want to restore from scratch? It can be time consuming for even the most enthusiastic of car fans, so you’ll want to make sure you have a plan. Thinking about how much money you want to spend is also important, so here is a step by step guide on how to restore a classic car on a budget.

  1. Find the right car

First, you’ll want to find a car that you can restore. You can save time and money by buying a car that’s partially restored, as it cuts down the amount of work. However, you may have to pay more upfront for this option. The best way to find the right car for you is to check online or talk to other car enthusiasts. Never rush into a project, as you’ll want to make the best decision in terms of time and money.

2. Locate the right parts

Checking online is a good place to begin restoring the car you’ll need to find replacement parts. You may get lucky and be able to salvage parts that are already in the car, but in most cases you’ll have to search elsewhere. The cheapest way to find parts is to contact local vehicle salvage centres to see if they have a similar look, with car collector groups being the best choice, as members offer parts for sale.

If you’re feeling adventurous you can visit a local scrap yard to find parts. This is a cheaper option, as there are various parts available. Once you’ve located a yard, it’s best to call ahead to find out what they specialise in.

3. Restoring Your Car

Now that you’ve found the right parts you can start restoring the car. You’ll want to find a comfortable place to work, like a garage, so the car is sheltered from the weather. Make a full assessment of the vehicle and determine how much work needs to be done. Be sure to keep money aside for a professional paint job to finish the vehicle, as it will look better in the long run.

The key to restoring the car is patience. It may be up to a year before the car is completed, as you’ll want to consider how long it’ll take to find parts. Never be afraid to ask for help from friends who have restoration experience.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to restore a classic car to its former glory. There’s the satisfaction of having creative control over the process, from deciding on colour, to improving on steering. Once you’ve restored the car, you can take it out on the road and enjoy the benefits of a stylish motor.
