Celebrity Car Collector: Guy Berryman
For some people, owning a classic car is a dream come true. They may have spent years saving up for one. Others have the money to afford an entire collection, such as Jay Leno. Coldplay’s Guy Berryman is famous for his talent with a bass guitar, but his passion for cars isn’t as well known. Berryman enjoys restoring classic cars, and his collection includes vehicles like the Abarth 750 Zagato and Bugatti Veyron.
Berryman is proud and a little embarrassed of his Bugatti Veyron. He feels it’s “the biggest superstar of all cars” but he also recalls taking it to a petrol station nearby his home in the Cotswolds. “The first time I took the Veyron there, the whole place emptied. The cashiers, people shopping and filling up their cars - everybody came over to see the car. It was really embarrassing.”
It’s not hard to see why people were in awe of the Veyron. Named the Car of the Decade on Top Gear, the motor can reach a top speed of 253 mph.
Berryman bought a Ferrari Dino for nostalgic purposes. To him, “it’s the most beautiful Ferrari of all time” and he remembered having a toy version of it when he was younger. The guitarist ended up buying two Dinos because the first one had too many imperfections.
Abarth 750 Zagato
The 750 Zagato is a beautiful little car that Berryman bought in America. As a passionate car researcher, Berryman came across some interesting information that made him want to purchase the car. “I started going through and researching this car, and it turns out, this was the Record Monza prototype, originally owned by Elio Zagato himself.” Berryman restored the vehicle back to its original specification.
Berryman’s Jaguar E-Type is one of the most recent additions to his collection. The car was previously owned by a UK Ferrari importer called Colonel Ronnie Hoare. Hoare took it to one of his dealerships so the company could see what it was up against on the track. It was disassembled, put back together and sold to motorcycle racer Mike Hailwood. Berryman is in the process of restoring it.
Alfa Romeo 6C Villa d’Est
Berryman has gone to great lengths to track down certain cars, such as his Alfa Romeo 6C Villa d’Este. He used a private detective and found the car in Atlanta, Georgia. The previous owner had bought it in 1964 and it featured a high-performance Corvette engine
