Classic Car Road Trip: Isle Of Skye

Summer is the perfect time to go on a road trip and the UK has plenty of wonderful places to visit. The Isle of Skye in Scotland features rugged landscapes and beautiful scenery. When you drive around the island it will feel as if you’ve been transported into another time period. From visiting the breathtaking Dunvegan Castle, to going for a swim in the mystical Fairy Pools, there’s a lot to do in Skye.

Dunvegan Castle

A trip to Skye wouldn’t be complete without seeing Dunvegan Castle. It’s the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. First built in the 13th century, the castle overlooks a loch. Dunvegan is filled with clan treasures, including the Fairy Flag. Legend has it that when the flag was unfurled in battle, Clan MacLeod would defeat their enemies.

Another heirloom on display is the Dunvegan Cup, gifted by the O’Neils of Ulster as a token of thanks to Chief Sir Rory Mor.

Old Man of Storr

When you’ve had enough of driving, you could go for a walk and stretch your legs. A great place to go for a hike is the Old Man of Storr, a large formation of rock that’s part of the Trotternish ridge. To complete the journey up and down the slope it should take you around 1 hour and 15 minutes and the top offers spectacular views of the island.

The Fairy Pools

Considered one of the most magical places in Scotland, the Fairy Pools can be found at the foot of the Black Cuillins. The crystal clear water in the pools give the area a mystical quality. A large waterfall marks the location of the pools, giving you the opportunity to snap some photos. If you’re feeling brave, you could go for a swim. Be sure to pack a wetsuit though because the water can be bracing!

Skye Museum of Island Life

The Skye Museum of Island Life is an outdoor museum set in the style of a Highland village. There are several thatched cottages to explore, giving you an idea of what life was like on the island 100 years ago.

Opened in 1965, the museum depicts the conditions that 19th century crofters lived in. Inside the cottages you’ll be able to see a range of crofting tools and historical archives. A famous story includes the tale of Flora MacDonald, who disguised Bonnie Prince Charlie as a spinning maid and smuggled him to safety.

Wildlife Spotting

Skye is home to a plethora of wildlife, with nature tours happening regularly. Take a boat trip from Portree and see white-tailed eagles up close as they skim the waves for prey. Head to Rubha Hunish on the north of the island to catch a glimpse of Minke, Humpback and Killer whales
