Del Boy’s Classic Cars Make Him A Modern Day Millionaire
When Del Boy uttered the words “this time next year, we’ll be millionaires” the audience knew he wouldn’t stop until he achieved his goal. Today, he’d be well on his way to living the high life, with his flat, garage and cars being worth a lot. The stars of Only Fools and Horses lived in a three-bedroom flat in Peckham, and while it might not have looked like much then, it’d fetch a cool £850,000 in the modern day.
Del’s lime and black 1980 Ford Capri, nicknamed ‘the pratmobile’ by Rodney, has been valued at £25,000 by a financial expert. It’s not the only motor to go for a good price, as the 1967 Reliant Regal Supervan II would be worth £5000. Various replicas of the van have been made over the years, wrongly based on a Reliant Robin rather than the Regal Supervan. Three Reliant Regals were used during filming, and boxer Ricky Hatton bought one for £44,000 in 2007. In addition, Del’s garage would be worth £25,000.
It’s no secret Del loved wearing jewellery, and experts have estimated his gold chain to be worth £469. During the 1985 Christmas special To Hull and Back, the brothers travelled to Holland with Uncle Albert’s help. Their diamond smuggling mission looked to go the same way as their other misadventures, but Del managed to bring two diamonds back to Peckham. Today, the diamonds would be worth £3 million.
The project was carried out to celebrate the new documentary series David Jason: My Life On Screen and The Story Of Only Fools And Horses. The three part documentary series started on the 26th August and can be watched on Gold. It covers Sir David’s career and gives insight into how the show changed his life.
Researchers watched 60 episodes of the sitcom to work out the Trotters’ fortune. Finance expert Jasmine Birtles said “if you look at all the accumulated assets Del Boy and Rodney had over the seven series of Only Fools and Horses they would be millionaires today and living the luxury lifestyle they always aspired to.”
Del and Rodney always wanted to be millionaires and they managed to achieve their dream. Lovely jubbly.
