Fuzz’s Top Tips With Carole Nash: How To Check Your Tyres

It’s an exciting time for us, as we’ve been collaborating with Fuzz Townshend and come up with ‘Fuzz’s Top Tips With Carole Nash.’ A series of videos designed to help you use your classic car more successfully, safely and pleasurably.

The 9-part series involves Fuzz giving his expert advice on classic cars and how to manage them. In the first video, Fuzz talks about the best way to check your tyres.

He begins by examining Porsche tyres and explains how you should read what’s written on them. From the markings, you’ll be able to tell what the tread depth and rim size are. As the legal requirement for tread depth is 1.6mm, you’ll get a good indication of whether the tyres need to be replaced.

Fuzz points out the tyres are cracked and how to find out when they were in poor condition. But Fuzz advises that you should check the date of the tyres to really get an understanding of how old they are.

In the video, Fuzz gives an example of tyres reading 34/6, meaning they were manufactured in the 34th week of 2006. Then, he looks at another set of tyres that are in better condition. They weren’t cracked and felt a lot sturdier than the first set. However, when Fuzz checked the date and found they were manufactured on the 4th March 2001, his response was to replace them immediately.

The most important lesson to take away is that you should always check the date of your tyres. By carrying out a thorough examination, you’ll be able to determine what condition the tyres are in. Even if they don’t look damaged, their age can be a major factor.
